321CK- ELLEN

NATIONAL ARCHIVES – RETURNS FOR FISHING BOATS; BT145

Under the Sea Fisheries Act of 1893 all fishing vessels had to be lettered (CK for Colchester) and numbered. The "ELLEN", owned by Richard John Cranfield,  was registered as 321CK. She later had the official number: 93,968 and her registry was cancelled in 1934.

The "ELLEN" had to have her registration endorsed annually and the nature of her employment was usually described as "Fishing with nets," "Dredging for oysters," and "All trawling except for shrimps."

Crewmen on Richard Cranfield’s ELLEN 321CK

The last photo also appears in John Leather’s book The Sailor’s Coast which is illustrated with photos taken by Douglas Went of Brightlingsea. The caption reads;

“Recovering a stowboat net: the crew of the Rowhedge smack Ellen, CK321, stowboating in the 1920s. They are passing girdlines around a sleeve of the stow net and have hauled a forward sleeve up on the main halyard to clear it out of the way, the fish having been worked aft from it. The mainsail is stowed and a cloud of gulls hover expectantly. The quarter boards are rigged, as is the binnacle for the compass on the hatch of the cabin, aft. The shroud deadeyes and lanyards are “woulded” with rope to avoid chafe of the net and the main ropes are rigged from the shrouds forward, to give some protection to those working on the foredeck.

The 50ft Ellen was built at Wivenhoe in 1886 for Walter Leavett, who then owned Rowhedge ferry. He let her to fishermen to work in winter and to yachting parties in summer – the only known local instance of such speculation. She was often let to the Glozier family for shrimping in summer, working out of the river Humber in Yorkshire in company with the Wivenhoe smack Elise and Yorkshire cutters from Paull. For summer party sailing a skylight was fitted over the main hatch and berths were fitted in the hold. She made several “yachting” trips to the continent with a Rowhedge crew. Leavett sold her to Zac Burch, who resold her to Captain Richard Cranfield of Rowhedge for about £250, then an average price for such a smack. She paid for herself in 18 months of good, skilful fishing by that consummate seaman, who was a noted yacht captain.

The Ellen was a spectacular performer in the smack race on regatta day and strangely, the Ellen and Elise once finished within six feet of each other in a Rowhedge regatta smack race after sailing a 22-mile course; such was the rivalry and spirit and skill of the smack skippers and crews, who settled the year’s yacht-racing scores in these annual tussles. After 40 years with the Rowhedge smack fleet and still a spectacular performer on regatta days in the smack race, she was sold to Harry Death of Brightlingsea who fished her from there until the Second World War, when she was hulked.”

THE ESSEX COUNTY STANDARD – Saturday 23 September 1905 - WYVENHOE AND ROWHEDGE REGATTA – ANOTHER  SUCCESSFUL  EVENT - “This annual event, which takes place alternately at Wyvenhoe and Rowhedge, was held at Wyvenhoe on Thursday, September 21, the day being an ideal one as far as the spectators were concerned, but scarcely any breeze prevailing for the sailing events. The yachts on the river wall presented a very gay appearance, being decorated with a grand array of flags, while the river was also packed with craft of all descriptions from the old smack boat to the up-to-date steam launch. The crowd which witnessed the racing on the Wyvenhoe side of the river was the largest assembled for many years…The entries were about the average. The smack race produced a close finish….The regatta concluded at 7.15 p.m. with a brilliant display of fireworks…

Smack race:- From Mersea Stone to Wyvenhoe – 1. Sunbeam (W.W. Cranfield), 2. Neva (L. Cranfield).

57 seconds between first and second. Ellen (R. Cranfield) did not finish.”
